Looking to the past, investing in the future

    Approximately 4,024 years of history

Goneke Investment Group is not just a firm but a legacy rooted in the promise of blessing and expansion given to Abraham and carried forward by his descendants. We operate with the understanding that true prosperity is enduring, generational, and inclusive. Our foundation in these time-honoured principles, combined with a commitment to innovation and philanthropy, guides us as we steward resources entrusted to us with integrity, grow investments with purpose, and fulfil a vision that stretches beyond ourselves to touch communities and lives globally. We invite our partners and investors to join us in this mission. By aligning ourselves with a legacy that has stood for generations, we are building a future that honours this promise—a future of enduring prosperity and meaningful impact for generations to come.

    Ambrose Ashley Chikukwa (September 16, 1936 - September 15, 2015)

Goneke Investment Group (GIG) is more than a private equity firm—it is the culmination of over seven decades of entrepreneurial courage, pioneering leadership, and a deep-seated commitment to Africa’s transformation. Our roots trace back to the vision of Ambrose Ashley Chikukwa, whose story of resilience and innovation laid the cornerstone for what would become one of Africa’s most purposeful investment groups.

At GIG, we are building on a multigenerational legacy of service, commerce, and nation-building—anchored in values of stewardship, faith, and excellence. This legacy begins not with a modern-day fund, but with a man whose dreams and determination broke through colonial barriers and whose enduring impact shaped the very DNA of our firm.

    1940s–1970s | The Formative Years

The legacy of Goneke Investment Group (GIG) begins not in boardrooms or global markets, but in the remarkable life and vision of Ambrose Ashley Chikukwa, the grandfather of GIG’s founder and the original architect of a transformative business philosophy rooted in faith, courage, and economic justice.

A first-generation African businessman, Ambrose's journey began with academic distinction, earning a rare scholarship to Stanford University in the 1950s—a monumental achievement for a black Rhodesian at the time. Upon returning to Southern Rhodesia in 1961, he began working at the United States Information Service, later advancing into a diplomatic role at the U.S. State Department, where he was stationed in Zimbabwe and later transferred to Nairobi, Kenya. During his years in Kenya, Ambrose played a critical and discreet role in supporting the Zimbabwean liberation struggle. He helped finance and host war veterans, including high-profile leaders such as Josiah Tongogara, offering refuge and strategic guidance. His home became a quiet hub of African resistance and solidarity, embodying a belief that economic freedom must walk hand-in-hand with political independence.

Following Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980, he returned home and founded Chimanimani Africa Private Limited, which would become the earliest institutional predecessor to Goneke Investment Group. This enterprise marked a bold new era of African entrepreneurship.

1980 | Independence and the Birth of Chimanimani Africa

Founded in 1980, Chimanimani Africa Private Limited was among Zimbabwe’s first indigenous-owned private enterprises with a pan-African and international commercial outlook. Under Ambrose’s leadership, the firm became the first black-owned Zimbabwean business to secure trade partnerships with Italy, successfully importing stationery and paper products for the Government of Zimbabwe, its subordinate ministries, and State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).

This was more than trade—it was an act of reclamation. By challenging the monopoly of colonial-era suppliers, Chimanimani Africa helped redirect economic value to local hands and paved the way for broader black economic participation in post-independence Zimbabwe.

1980s–1990s | A Force for Social and Economic Change

Ambrose’s impact went far beyond commerce. In the heart of Harare, he rewrote the rules of institutional leadership by becoming the first black President of the Harare Club—formerly the whites-only Salisbury Club, founded in 1896. His election shattered a 90-year tradition of exclusion, transforming the club’s identity and signaling a new social order.

He also became the first black President of the Rotary Club of Harare, using the platform to advance healthcare, education, and entrepreneurship projects across under-resourced communities. Whether championing youth development or breaking racial barriers in tennis and golf clubs, Ambrose was a bridge-builder in a divided society.

Faith, Integrity, and the Order of Epiphany

At the core of Ambrose’s life was his devout Christian faith. He was a pillar of the Anglican Church in Zimbabwe, not only in service but also in physical legacy. He was responsible for the construction of a church in Mutare, a gift of devotion to both God and community. In recognition of his unwavering service and moral leadership, he received the Order of Epiphany, the highest honor awarded by the Anglican Diocese of Harare (Church of the Province of Central Africa).

This distinction reflected not only his piety but also his role in applying Christian principles—justice, service, humility—to public life and commerce. His life was a living sermon on stewardship, and his contributions laid the spiritual and ethical groundwork for the generations that followed.

Legacy Institutionalised – The Rise of GIG

Today, Goneke Investment Group (GIG) is the institutional manifestation of Ambrose’s vision. From Chimanimani Africa’s pioneering work in economic access to Ambrose’s social and spiritual contributions, GIG carries forward a deeply rooted philosophy: Powering African Economies. Enhancing African Lives.

At GIG, legacy is not a marketing term—it is a mandate. The same values of resilience, sustainability, stewardship, and inclusion that defined Ambrose's life are now embedded into GIG’s DNA. As a multi-generational, multicultural, and mission-driven private equity and asset management firm, GIG is committed to transcending financial returns—creating lasting impact through capital deployment, industrial transformation, and community restoration.
